Ofcom deals bitter blow….

 
Disappointingly GLOSSFM has not been awarded a Community Radio licence in this current round.
Ofcom broke the news that we would not be awarded a licence on the grounds of “no suitable frequency could be found”. In part, due to our rural position, Ofcom could not find any suitable frequencies that would not interfere with existing services or achieve our coverage area.

Our congratulations go to Bradley Stoke Radio, who have been awarded a licence, albeit with a reduced coverage than that is normally offered.

Listen out for a stunning new single on GLOSSFM which was written, performed and produced in Wotton-under-Edge no less!

The song is called Meet Me in Winter and is the work of Katie Elliot, a composer and pianist who lives in the town. Katie wrote the song to say thankyou to those around her who helped as she battled depression.

The result is a single and video which are performed by members of the community and can be downloaded – http://www.meetmeinwinter.org.

GLOSSFM’S David Wrench said: ‘As a community radio station we are very keen to give the single airtime on our 87.7 FM broadcast. When that finishes on Sunday November 27, we will continue to play the song on our 24-hour webcast.

‘Katie wanted to create a song to celebrate friendship and people’s power to change things. She recognised that the love and support of her community had made all the difference to her when she needed it and she wanted to give something back.

‘Gathering round her a large team of local people in her home-town of Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, Katie masterminded a huge project which has resulted in a single and a video performed by members of the community.’

On YouTube Katie tells her story and also explains why it’s important to talk about mental health.

Donations can be made to Mind, Shelter and Wotton Youth.

Whilst driving through South Gloucestershire on Thursday evening Mark Jones, national radio broadcaster, tuned into GLOSSFM and had this to say about the station, via Twitter.

“Great to hear strong local Community radio sounding so good. Cracking signal punching thru on 87.7!”

After many hours and sleepless nights, the programming team have finished the schedule for the November FM broadcast.

Programme scheduler Chris Mountain said: ‘We’ve got a great range of programmes lined up, with plenty of opportunities for the listeners to get involved. There will be good music, humour, discussion about local issues, local history, and information about what’s on.

The countdown has begun to GLOSSFM’s regular autumn broadcast which begins on October 31 and runs until November 27.

Its directors have applied to Ofcom for a licence go on air 365 days a year.

They will find out whether they’ve been successful by the end of the year.

GLOSSFM currently puts out two radio broadcasts a year, in spring and winter, each lasting four weeks. Ofcom, which regulates the UK communications industry, was sufficiently impressed by the station to invite its directors to apply for a full-time licence earlier this year. A meeting of volunteers voted to go ahead and a working party was set up to write the submission.

GLOSSFM is one of several Westcountry stations bidding for a full-time licence, which would run for five years. The successful station will have up to two years to prepare for full-time operations.

‘This is a very exciting time to be part of GLOSSFM,’ said a spokesman for the station. ‘It was very pleasing to be invited to apply for a full-time licence and if we get, it I’m sure we’ll be able to count on the help of lots of talented local people to make it a success.’

Meanwhile the countdown has begun to GLOSSFM’s regular autumn broadcast which begins on October 31 and runs until November 27.

‘We’re especially interested to hear from groups or schools who might like contribute to existing programmes or even make their own specials. Help would be given if needed. Marlwood School are regular broadcasters. They are scheduled in for an hour one Thursday to give information about what is going on, showcasing talent at the school, and so on.

GLOSSFM, which is run by volunteers, began broadcasting in 2005 as ThornburyFM. It changed its name in 2009 when a new mast allowed it to be heard further afield in South Gloucestershire.

Local club DJ Neil Smallshaw joins the GlossFM team.

Regular listeners will be very well aware of the battle between these GLOSS FM presenters. Each week trying to out-wit each other by playing a piece of music – well some would cough at the term music. This time around, the  ‘Cheese Wars’ have been well and truly won by the Saturday morning duo, well done to Ross & Dave.

On Tuesday 24th May, local cricket hero Rich MacKinnon will be dropping into the Tuesday Night Party Show.

Rich, who plays for Rockhampton, will be giving some inside details of the fast approaching Lashings World IX match at the club. He’ll also be giving listeners the chance of winning some tickets, for this truly memorable event. So, make sure you tune into Phill & Gav’s show 8-10pm on Tuesday 24th May.
